announces Cinco De Mayo activities on May 6
Pueblo- Colorado State
University-Pueblo will celebrate Cinco De Mayo on May 6 with a focus on
Pueblo area high school and middle school students. The activities are
sponsored by Chicano Studies, the Multi-Cultural Center, Upward Bound,
College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the History Department, and the
President’s office.
Festivities will begin at 10 a.m. with an introduction and a short
presentation on the history of Cinco De Mayo Dr. Fawn-Amber Montoya,
assistant professor of Chicano studies, in the Occiato University Center
Ballroom. The admissions office will conduct tours of campus followed by
lunch from 11:30 a.m.-noon.
Juan Alvarez, a Latino acoustic guitarist will provide complimentary music
during the noon hour in advance of a presentation by well-known Mexican
artist Simon Silva. Born in Mexicali, Mexico, Silva emigrated to the United
States at a young as one of 11 children in a migrant farm worker family. His
experience as a farm worker not only taught him the importance of education,
but serves as an inspiration for most of his artwork. His works include
Amor a Todas Horas, Las Comadres, Dos Mujeres, and
Un Dia de Campo.
