Colorado State University - Pueblo
announces winners of SE Colorado History Day event
Pueblo- More than 400 students in
grades 4-12 converged on the Colorado State University-Pueblo campus last
Saturday (Feb. 23) to participate in the National History Day in
Southeastern Colorado competition. Schools from Pueblo District 70, Pueblo
City Schools, La Junta, Manzanola, Canon City, and Vilas Online were
represented, with 83 students qualifying for the state competition at the
CU-Denver Auraria campus on May 3. The top two winners in each category at
the state competition qualify for the History Day national competition held
June 15-19 at the University of Maryland.
This was the 13th consecutive year that CSU-Pueblo has sponsored and hosted
the southeastern Colorado competition. The regional History Day competition
again was partially supported by a Teaching American History grant that
Pueblo District 70 and CSU-Pueblo received from the U.S. Department of
Education.
This year’s theme was “Conflict and Compromise in History.”
CSU-Pueblo Provost Russ Meyer was the featured speaker at the awards
ceremony, where ribbons, trophies, and cash prizes were awarded to the top
entries in 16 categories. Top honors went to Brian Ketterman from D70’s
Connect School, who won the Presidential Scholar Award for the Best Overall
Individual Entry, a Junior Individual Documentary on "The Apollo-Soyuz Joint
Space Mission." He qualified for a $1,000 scholarship if he chooses to
attend CSU-Pueblo. Kaysie Walter from La Junta High School qualified for a
$500 College of Humanities and Social Sciences Scholarship as the Best
Individual High School Individual Entry for her Senior Individual
Documentary, "Tears of the Dust Bowl."
