First Annual Southern Colorado High School
Honor Band performs at CSU-Pueblo
Pueblo- More than 50 students from 18
Colorado high schools performed a free concert Saturday, Feb. 2, in Hoag
Recital Hall on the Colorado State University-Pueblo campus as the first
Southern Colorado High School Honor Band. The concert featured 55 high
school musicians under the direction of Lt. Col. Larry Lang, Commander and
Conductor of the Air Force Academy Band.
The students attended workshops and rehearsed together for two days before
their first performance. The evening’s program included the following
pieces: The Star Spangled Banner, Towards a New Horizon,
The Thunderer, On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss, Sόlas Ané,
In Einem Anderen Licht, and America the Beautiful.
These 55 students were selected from a pool of 85 who submitted CDs and
tapes for auditions. For their audition, students were required to perform
from specific audition pieces, or select two minutes from a piece of their
choosing, as well as to perform scales. They were then scored and ranked by
CSU-Pueblo music instructors Dina Hollingsworth, piccolo and flute; Mike
De Luca, clarinet; Brad Eastin, saxophone; Mathew Evans, horn; Al Eberhardt,
trumpet; Rick Crafts, trombone; Todd Sizer, euphonium and tuba; Aaron
Turner, percussion; and Sara Stewart from the Air Force Academy, oboe and
bassoon.
Students who participated in the Honor Band are listed by hometown, then
high school within that town, alphabetically by name, followed by their
instrument.
