Colorado State University - Pueblo joins
VDAY awareness campaign to end violence

Colorado State University-Pueblo will join VDAY 10 celebrants globally who
are attempting to end violence against girls and women through a series of
consciousness-raising public performances, education, and networking.
Riding the 3rd Wave Club, the Women’s Studies Program, Office of Student
Activities, and the Counseling Center at Colorado State University-Pueblo
will sponsor a variety of activities Feb. 25-28 as part of its 2008
CSU-Pueblo VDay Campaign.
Over its 10 years of art and activism, the VDAY movement has educated
millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end
it, crafted international educational, media and advertising campaigns,
launched the Karama program in the Middle East, reopened shelters, and
funded over 5000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in
Kenya, Haiti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt and Iraq. For more on

V-DAY CSU-PUEBLO 2008 activities kick off with a production of Eve Ensler’s
The Vagina Monologues starring CSU-Pueblo students, faculty, and
staff at 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 in Occhiato University Center Ballroom.
Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students at the door. The Vagina
Monologues is an Obie Award-winning episodic play written by Eve Ensler
which ran at the off-Broadway Westside Theatre in 1996. The production has
been staged internationally, and a television version featuring Ensler was
produced by cable TV channel HBO. (NOTE: This performance includes sexually
explicit content and may not be appropriate for children.)
Proceeds from the performance will benefit the Rape Crisis Center of Pueblo
and the Women of New Orleans and the Gulf South. Co-sponsors of this event
include Riding the 3rd Wave, Women’s Studies program, Chicano Studies
Program as well as the First-Year Center, Student Life and Development, and
the Office of Student Activities.
Students will share their personally written monologues inspired by The
Vagina Monologues from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26 in the
First-Year Center on the second floor of the University Library.
CSU-Pueblo Psychology Professor Karen Yescavage and student Sage Aragon will
lead a conversation, Faking It, about sexual pretending and how to prevent
it from 2-3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25 in the First-Year Center.
On Feb. 27, CSU-Pueblo student Rachel Dupler will present, “Darfur--Rape
as a Tactic of War and Genocide,” which will focus on how and why rape is
used as a tactic of war, its effect on women, and how we can address this
global issue. Special attention will focus on the Darfur region. This event
will be held from 1-2 p.m. in the First-Year Center.
To conclude the week, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Chicano Studies
Fawn-Amber Montoya will present STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) and
You along with community organization, the Glendale 4, from 2-3 p.m. on
Thursday, Feb. 28 in the First-Year Center. The discussion will focus
on the STI rates in Pueblo as well as STI prevention.
