CSU-Pueblo panel to discuss Constitution as “living” document

Pueblo-
The United States Constitution as a “living, breathing document” will be the focus of a panel to commemorate Constitution Day on Sept. 19 at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Educational institutions in the United States that receive federal funding must observe Constitution Day, September 17th (or the week before or the week after when the 17th falls on a weekend). Many campuses have transformed this little-known federal mandate into an opportunity to reflect on our government, our liberties, and our obligations as citizens in this democracy. CSU-Pueblo is one of hundreds of colleges and universities involved in The American Democracy Program (ADP) led by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the New York Times. ADP encourages activities on nearly 200 campuses that increase civic engagement (from volunteerism to voting) among young people, particularly college students.

The panel will be held from 1-2 p.m. on Wed., Sept. 19 in the Occhiato University Center Aspen Leaf and will including the following faculty members discussing the Constitution from a specific focus: Assistant Professor Matt Harris (original intent), Coordinator of Women’s Studies Becki Scoli (women's suffrage), and Coordinator of Chicano Studies Fawn Amber Montoya (Supreme Court Case Hernandez v. Texas/Hispanics and civil rights).
