Colorado State University – Pueblo Wind
Ensemble presents “The British are Coming”
Pueblo- The Colorado State University – Pueblo Wind Ensemble (otherwise
known as a Concert Band) will feature the music of prominent English
composers at a free concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12 in Hoag Hall on the
CSU-Pueblo campus.
The program will feature music of prominent English composers who turned to
the wind band as an alternative to the orchestra in the early 20th century.
Composers such as Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Percy Grainger
were the first to recognize the band as a new and viable means of musical
expression. Composers of the first rank and the first in many years to bring
England into the forefront of the musical world, they created original works
for band that were of the highest quality, leading others to do the same.
These and many other compositions by a number of composers form the
cornerstone of the now extensive body of literature for this musical medium.
The program will include:
Toccata Marziale – Ralph Vaughan Williams
English Dances – Malcolm Arnold
Crown Imperial – William Walton
Intermission
The Immovable Do – Percy Grainger
Irish Tune From County Derry – Grainger
First Suite in E flat for Military Band – Gustav Holst
The CSU-Pueblo Wind Ensemble features more than 60 musicians, primarily
students of the university music program, and is conducted by Dr. Mark
Hudson, chair of the Department of Music.
