Colorado State University - Pueblo to
celebrate science this week at Symposium
Pueblo- The College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) at Colorado State
University – Pueblo will host its second annual Student Research Symposium
and Open House on Friday, October 27. The event will showcase student
research projects and will be held from noon to 2 p.m. in the Life Sciences
Building Foyer . The public is encouraged to attend.
Undergraduate and graduate students will present posters of recently
completed scientific research conducted with faculty mentors at CSU-Pueblo,
and also, faculty at other universities and professional programs across the
country. Experimental studies have been completed in the Departments of
Biology and Chemistry at CSU-Pueblo, as well as the University of
Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the CSU-Fort Collins Department of
Biology. The projects that will be presented encompass a broad range of
scientific studies including environmental bioscience, organic synthesis,
biochemistry, biomedical science, and analytical chemistry.
Undergraduate research opportunities have been shown to be critical in the
development of important skills for students that are key to future success
in securing employment and acceptance into competitive graduate and
professional programs. The College of Science and Mathematics has sponsored
an undergraduate research program in each of the past two years and the
number of student participants has increased by 75 percent to 42 students
during the 2005-06 academic year. Students have also been supported by
summer research programs elsewhere including the National Science Foundation
REU program at CSU in Fort Collins.
