Colorado State University – Pueblo
sponsors Día de los Muertos celebration
Pueblo- Colorado State University – Pueblo will celebrate the Day of the
Dead, Dia de los Muertos, with a prayer vigil, explanatory video, dancing,
and altar exhibit from noon-2 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2 in the
Occhiato University Center. The event is sponsored by the Catholic Student
Union, Chicanos Studies Program, Spanish Program, M.E.Ch.A., Mujeres Unidas,
and the Student Activities Board.
A 20 min. video and handouts on the meaning and tradition of the Día de los
muertos (Day of the Dead) will be available throughout the day in the OUC
Hearthwell Lounge Two separate student organizations will conduct
fundraisers as M.E.Ch.A. will sell tamales and Mujeres Unidas will sell Día
de los muertos t-shirts. In addition, several food items will be offered
free, including atole and pan de muerto from Mexico (plain round sweet bread
sprinkled with white sugar and a crisscrossed bone shape on top) and colada
morada and guaguas de pan from Ecuador.
Día de los muertos altars will be on display at the OUC Hearthwell Lounge.
Visitors to the altar exhibit, which will celebrate the lives of individuals
or groups, will have the opportunity to vote for the best altar, with the
winner earning $150 from Student Activities Board. The voting will begin at
noon on Nov. 1 and end at 2 p.m. on Nov. 2. If your student club, campus
organization, or office would like to participate in creating an altar, you
MUST reserve a space by calling 549-2151.
A non-denominational prayer vigil will be held at the OUC Great Hall for
those who have passed on. At the vigil, attendees may honor their loved ones
by placing a photo of them at the designated prayer table.
The day and evening time slots both will feature performances by Toch.tli
Aztec Dancers and Native American drummers.
