Pueblo School of Arts and Sciences will
present a Paideia Community Night from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on
Pueblo- Featured speaker Dr. Terry Roberts from the University of North
Carolina will discuss how collaborative, intellectual dialogue (the Socratic
Seminar) in schools is helping students read critically, listen closely,
respond thoughtfully, clarify their statements, and become productive
members of their community. By actively participating in a Socratic Seminar,
participants will discover the vital communications tool that supports the
democratic process.
Roberts is the Director of the National Paideia Center. A former high school
English teacher and coach, he is a practicing scholar in American
literature. He is the author of books about Thomas Wolfe and Elizabeth
Spencer as well as the primary author of The Power of Paideia Schools:
Defining Lives Through Learning and co-author (with Laura Billings) of
Teaching for Understanding: the Paideia Classroom. He is also the author of
a number of articles about education and education reform, most recently
“Asheville Middle School: a 6-8 Community of Conscience and Intellect” (with
Laura Billings in the May 2006 issue of Middle School Journal). He brings to
school reform the passion of a devoted teacher as well as the conviction
that intellectual rigor is the birthright of every American child.
