CSU–Pueblo to broadcast Constitution throughout the week
Pueblo- Colorado State University-Pueblo is spending this week reading
the U.S. Constitution over local airwaves in observance of recent federal
legislation that requires all educational institutions that receive federal
funding to commemorate Constitution Day, Sunday, Sept. 17. This year will be
the 219th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution.
Roy Sonnema, interim dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences,
said the event complements similar activities across the country such as
panels, debates, lectures, essay contests, as well as distribution of the
Constitution. In recognition of Constitution Day, the College of Humanities
and Social Sciences and the Department of Mass Communications and Center for
New Media is currently broadcasting readings of the entire U.S. Constitution
in short segments on the university radio station, Rev89, 89.5, during the
week (September 11-15), leading up to Constitution Day on Sunday. The
readings of the Constitution can be heard in order during the stop-sets
hourly at 45 minutes after the hour between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday.
Many students, alumni, and faculty assisted in recording; special thanks to
Matt Garbiso, Rev89 general manager, who supervised the production and
broadcast of these recordings.
CSU-Pueblo is one of hundreds of colleges and universities involved in The
American Democracy Program (ADP) led by the American Association of State
Colleges and Universities and the New York Times. ADP encourages activities
on nearly 200 campuses that increase civic engagement (ranging from
volunteerism to voting) among young people, particularly college students.
“We invite listeners to take in these broadcasts and reflect upon this
extraordinary document,” Sonnema said.
