CSU–Pueblo to host Fifth Annual Summer
Teacher Institute
Pueblo- The Colorado State University – Pueblo Teacher Education Program
will host its Fifth Annual Summer Institute on campus, Thursday, July 20.
This year’s theme is “Your Classroom: Creating a Place for Academic, Social,
and Linguistic Success.”
The program will begin at 7:30 a.m. with registration, packet pickup, and a
reception in the Life Sciences Auditorium. Opening greetings will take place
at 8 a.m., followed by the first keynote address by Drs. David and Yvonne
Freeman, who will address “Closing the Achievement Gap for English Language
Learners.” The Freemans teach at the University of Texas at Brownsville,
where Yvonne is a professor of bilingual education, and David serves as a
professor of language arts/ESL. Both are interested in literacy education
for English language learners. In addition to conducting staff development
with school districts across the country, they present regularly at state,
national, and international conferences. The Freemans have published books,
articles, and book chapters separately and jointly on the topics of second
language teaching, biliteracy, bilingual education, and second language
acquisition. Their books include Essential Linguistics, Closing the
Achievement Gap, and Between Worlds.
Dr. Maria Guajardo Lucero, executive director of the Mayor’s Office for
Education and Children in Denver, will deliver the second keynote address.
Her topic, “Advancing the Strength of Diversity,” will discuss leadership
issues tied to diversity. Lucero recently was awarded the Gandhi, King,
Ikeda Award for her leadership and commitment to excellence in public
education. She is a national spokesperson on topics of educational
attainment, positive youth development, and the strength of diversity.
Lucero’s publications include The Power of Parents: Parent Engagement in
Schools and the Developmental Assets.
In addition to the speakers, the institute will offer a variety of breakout
sessions by education professionals on how to create academic, social, and
linguistic success in the classroom.
Participants may attend the one-day conference for $100 ($75 for SCTEA
partners), including lunch. The Division of Continuing Education will offer
one semester hour of University graduate credit for $45 (to be paid the day
of the conference).
