CSU–Pueblo to host Fifth Annual Summer Teacher Institute

Pueblo-
The Colorado State University – Pueblo Teacher Education Program will host its Fifth Annual Summer Institute on campus, Thursday, July 20. This year’s theme is “Your Classroom: Creating a Place for Academic, Social, and Linguistic Success.”

The program will begin at 7:30 a.m. with registration, packet pickup, and a reception in the Life Sciences Auditorium. Opening greetings will take place at 8 a.m., followed by the first keynote address by Drs. David and Yvonne Freeman, who will address “Closing the Achievement Gap for English Language Learners.” The Freemans teach at the University of Texas at Brownsville, where Yvonne is a professor of bilingual education, and David serves as a professor of language arts/ESL. Both are interested in literacy education for English language learners. In addition to conducting staff development with school districts across the country, they present regularly at state, national, and international conferences. The Freemans have published books, articles, and book chapters separately and jointly on the topics of second language teaching, biliteracy, bilingual education, and second language acquisition. Their books include Essential Linguistics, Closing the Achievement Gap, and Between Worlds.

Dr. Maria Guajardo Lucero, executive director of the Mayor’s Office for Education and Children in Denver, will deliver the second keynote address. Her topic, “Advancing the Strength of Diversity,” will discuss leadership issues tied to diversity. Lucero recently was awarded the Gandhi, King, Ikeda Award for her leadership and commitment to excellence in public education. She is a national spokesperson on topics of educational attainment, positive youth development, and the strength of diversity. Lucero’s publications include The Power of Parents: Parent Engagement in Schools and the Developmental Assets.

In addition to the speakers, the institute will offer a variety of breakout sessions by education professionals on how to create academic, social, and linguistic success in the classroom.

Participants may attend the one-day conference for $100 ($75 for SCTEA partners), including lunch. The Division of Continuing Education will offer one semester hour of University graduate credit for $45 (to be paid the day of the conference).
