CSU–Pueblo Women’s Studies Conference Provides Options

Pueblo –Should I go to college? Can I afford it? Where would I go? What would I go for? These are all common questions that run through the minds of teenagers. The Colorado State University- Pueblo’s Women’s Studies Department will attempt to provide some real world guidance to more than 75 local high school women by providing them with options they may not have considered for their futures.

The second annual Real World 101 Conference will take place Wednesday (Nov. 9) in the CSU-Pueblo Occhiato University Center Ballroom from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The registration fee is $5 with some fee waivers available. According to Carol Loats, event coordinator and coordinator of the CSU-Pueblo Women's Studies program, the day will begin with a panel of young women who have faced and overcome unique obstacles while continuing their education past high school.
“The students will engage in hands-on activities geared toward developing and refining visions of themselves in the future and evaluating their own values and attitudes about jobs and work,” she said. “They also will examine their sex role stereotypes and consider how those stereotypes may keep them from thinking about all the possibilities for their futures.”

High school counselors and other organizational leaders are key facilitators for this event, while numerous University and community groups have played a major role, including MASS GEAR-UP, Boys and Girls Clubs- Girls Inc, Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation, Pueblo Work Force Center, the District Attorney’s Community Outreach Program, Spanish Peaks Mental Health Center, Pueblo City-County Health Department Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, and PCC Alternative High School Diploma Program.

Those interested in participating in the conference should contact their high school counselors or call Loats at (719) 549-2348.
