CSU – Pueblo hires Garcia as new
Auxiliary Services Director
Pueblo - A New Mexico administrator with more than 27 years of experience in
student development and services at a variety of institutions has been named
the Director of Auxiliary Services at Colorado State University-Pueblo.
Selected from a candidate pool of more than 60 applicants from across the
country, A. Ramón Garcia will begin his duties on Oct. 17.
As Director of Auxiliary Services, Garcia will provide leadership and
direction for administrative units with budgets totaling more than $8
million, including the Occhiato University Center, the University Bookstore,
the Belmont Residence Hall, the Child Care Center, contracted dining and
catering services, conferences, campus vending, and miscellaneous
self-funded enterprise activities. In addition to managing staff in these
units, the director is responsible for negotiating contracts with outside
service providers; maintaining strong customer relationships with students,
student organizations, and other campus and community constituencies; and
developing marketing and service campaigns to promote Auxiliary Services.
"CSU-Pueblo offered me an opportunity to grow professionally, to utilize my
experience and expertise in a much broader scope than where I am now,”
Garcia said. “The people I met at CSU-Pueblo during my interview were
another attraction for me. I sensed a real desire to move forward and be
proactive rather than reactive.”
Garcia’s service orientation and extensive experience in student life caused
him to emerge from among an extremely qualified pool, according to Joanne
Ballard, Vice President for Finance and Administration.
“We must keep in mind that our students (customers) are THE reason we exist,
for without them, there would be no need for us. Service to our students
must be a focus for the entire division if we are to be successful in
providing them with resources and services that let them know we care about
them as a whole and are not just doing our jobs,” Garcia wrote as part of
his application.
Since 1991, he has served as Director of the Campus Union and Auxiliary
Operations at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. From 1983-91, he
was the Assistant Dean of Students at Midwestern State University in Wichita
Falls, Texas, where he designed and coordinated the University’s ID card
system, assisted with various capital improvements within the University,
and coordinated more than 70 student organizations. He was also Assistant to
the Vice President for Student Affairs at Howard Payne University in
Brownwood, Tex., and a Living Center Director at California Baptist College
in Riverside, Calif.
Garcia earned a bachelor’s degree in Religious Education from Howard Payne
University and his master’s degree in Religious Education from Golden Gate
Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, Calif.
