Pueblo School of Arts and Sciences to create and fill Empty Bowls

Pueblo-  How can you eat a meal and feed the hungry at the same time? The Pueblo School of Arts and Sciences will create bowls and then fill them as part of the 10th Annual Empty Bowls Nite 2005 to be held at lunch and dinner on Thursday, Oct. 6 at the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center Jackson Conference Room. This year’s event also is the opening event for the Colorado Art Education Association Conference, Oct. 6-9.

All proceeds from the event will benefit local charities including, Pueblo Community Soup Kitchen, Posada, and Way Side Cross Gospel Rescue Mission. Funds raised will be used to provide food and housing for displaced and needy families within the Pueblo community. The empty bowls project is a nationwide campaign to create hunger awareness. PSAS first initiated participation in the Pueblo community 10 years ago.

“This event serves as our community service learning classroom, supporting the needy in Pueblo,” according to PSAS Principal Cheryl Gomez. “Community service supporting life-long learning as well as the arts component of the project both are aligned with the mission and philosophy of our school.”

A $10 ticket offers you a bowl of soup from one of Pueblo’s best restaurants, entertainment, and a pottery bowl to take home either from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. or 5 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 6. PSAS volunteer students and parents and schools throughout the area have provided hand crafted and decorated more than 600 pottery bowls for the cause.

This year, as every year, there will also be a silent art auction. Local artists are invited to donate artwork or handmade bowls for the auction. The deadline for art donations is 5 p.m. on Sept. 30 at PSAS Art Studio, 1745 Acero.

The evening’s entertainment will be provided by a PSAS instrumental music group, El Grupo Folklorico Amoray, as well as local musicians and high school students.

Colorado businesses and restaurants also will contribute by donating food and services for the dinner.

For more information, please call Cynthia Ramu, PSAS Empty Bowls Coordinator, at 549-2616 or 546-0315.
