PLP at CSU – Pueblo to host high school leadership conference

Pueblo-  The President’s Leadership Program at Colorado State University- Pueblo will encourage high school leaders to get moving as part of its 4th annual high school leadership conference next week.

This year’s conference, Leadership in Motion, will be held from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesday, (Sept. 27) in the Occhiato University Center on the CSU-Pueblo campus. This event is held for local high school students who have shown an interest in being leaders through holding leadership positions or participating in leadership activities at their high schools.

The $20 per person registration fee includes breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack.
Registration for the high school conference begins at 8 a.m. to be followed by an icebreaker competition led by Freshmen PLP students. Beginning at 9 a.m., keynotes speaker for this year’s conference will be new head women’s basketball coach at CSU-Pueblo Kip Drown.
Drown, former head coach at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, became the new head women’s basketball coach in July 18. Drown has a proven track record during more than two decades of collegiate coaching. His 22 years as head coach at the collegiate level and 268-227 record make Drown the most-experienced and winningest women’s basketball coach in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. He also has coached at Division II Southwest Baptist University and NAIA Georgia Southwestern State.

Beginning at 9:30 a.m., students rotate among four sessions throughout the day that focus on different aspects of leadership, including the job application/interview process (Moving On) conflict resolution (Moving Out), and self-leadership (Moving Within). Several CSU-Pueblo basketball players, who also are members of PLP, will teach the group to use their talents and skills as part of a disabled basketball challenge in the Belmont Residence Hall gym (Moving Up).
The PLP program at CSU-Pueblo is one of seven in the Colorado Leadership Alliance, a consortium of comprehensive leadership education programs at undergraduate institutions across Colorado. Through shared resources and collaborative efforts, CLA’s focus is to develop the next generation of Colorado's leaders. PLP develops and trains emerging leaders at CSU-Pueblo through a four – year academic leadership program focused on academic and experiential learning. Scholars are given opportunities to obtain leadership experience through mentoring, internships, etiquette training, and presentations by leaders in various fields from government and education to the service sectors.
