Colorado State University – Pueblo seeks students for high altitude balloon experiment

Pueblo- The Colorado Space Grant Consortium, (CSGC) at Colorado State University-Pueblo, (CSU-Pueblo) is seeking Junior Space Engineers (students) to form Space Engineer teams and to participate in a high-flying experiment later this fall. In December, CSGC will launch a High Altitude Balloon to an altitude of nearly 100,000 feet that will contain an array of student-designed projects and experiments.

The CSGC is seeking proposals from middle school and high school student teams in Pueblo County. Five proposals will be selected and funded by CSGC. The five successful teams will then design, build, and have their projects attached to the High Altitude Balloon that will tentatively be launched on Dec. 10. The deadline for the proposal submission is Sept. 24 with the announcement of the winning proposals to be made in early October.
Program coordinators Dr. Hüseyin Sarper, professor of engineering, and Dr. Wolfgang Sauer, professor and chair of mechanical engineering technology, will visit classrooms to present an overview of the launch and a summary of past projects to help the students design an original project of their own, which they will build, fly, monitor, recover and study for scientific results.

From the submitted entries, five proposals will be selected by faculty from CSU-Pueblo that meet the following guidelines:
(1) Competition is open to all Pueblo County Middle and High School Students.
(2) Each team may submit only one proposal; schools may field several teams.
(3) Proposal must fully describe the task of the experiment or research to be performed.
(4) It must include a basic description of measurements to be taken or experiment to be conducted as well as:
a. Sketches describing shape and contents of experiment.
b. Tentative Bill of Materials to include approximate costs.
c. Proposed use of data collected. (Paper, poster, team presentations, etc.)

(5) Letter of Commitment from the school Principal and Team’s sponsoring teacher.
Letters must include statements expressing desire of school and team to become involved with the CSGC at Colorado State University-Pueblo and to promote the completion of their school’s experimental project. Letters must state if this program will be part of regular classroom activities or if it will be an after school activity. (Primary contact person to be named, including telephone and e-mail address.)
For additional information on the project or to set up a classroom visit, contact Sarper at 549-2889 or huseyin.sarper@colostate-pueblo.edu or Sauer at 549-2884 or wolfgang.sauer@colostate-pueblo.edu.

April Mason, Dean of the College of Applied Human Sciences at CSU--Fort Collins, and nutrition professional herself, said, "This joint program will lead to more qualified nutrition professionals, who are needed to address the significant health and wellness issues facing our society. I am pleased our two campuses can work together to address this important need."
