CSU - Pueblo Music Fest XII offers Camps,
Mariachi Fest, July 4th Extravaganza
Pueblo- Community and diversity are the themes of Colorado Music Fest
XII, presented by Colorado State University-Pueblo, which will feature
concerts in on-campus and off-campus venues along with the popular July 4th
Extravaganza. Colorado Music Fest XII is a summer long series (June
11-August 5) of music camps and concerts coordinated by the CSU-Pueblo
Department of Music.
Music Fest XII events begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 with performances
by Grupo Folklórico del Pueblo and Ballet Folklórico Semblanzas de New
Mexico in CSU-Pueblo’s Hoag Hall. The dancers will perform traditional
Mexican folk dances to live music performed by Voces Veracruzanas de Xalapa,
Veracruz Mexico. Tickets are $10 per person.
Grupo Folklorico del Pueblo, the Peoples’ Folk Group, is a folk arts
organization that was originally founded in 1996 as the Ballet Folklórico de
Pueblo and throughout its changes remains committed to the preservation of
the community’s folk culture. Its shows and classes include Mexican and
Spanish dance but soon will expand to include music and other areas of folk
dance from around the world, such as Middle East, Italy, Germany, and the
Slavic States. Ballet Folklorico Semblanzas de New Mexico was formed in May,
2004, with the idea of merging and preserving Mexican Folklore. This group
is committed with the idea of not solely presenting dances, but also
representing the celebrations and customs of Mexican pueblos.
This year’s Music Fest will increase its focus on community involvement and
diversity by celebrating Pueblo and Southern Colorado’s multi-cultural
heritage with performances in various neighborhoods. To showcase the widely
varied, cross-cultural talent of the area, Music Fest will host a series of
workshops and events highlighting specific ethnic heritages, such as
Hispanic, Native American, and African American. Teams of CSU-Pueblo music
faculty and students also will perform at community and recreation centers
throughout the region.
More than 150 children will receive educational instruction and performance
opportunities during the Jazz, String, Guitar, Keyboard, and Vocal camps and
an estimated 30,000 community members will have an opportunity to attend
numerous concerts (schedule follows). In addition to camp concerts, Music
Fest XII will bring back the Southern Colorado Mariachi Fest, a gathering of
the region’s best mariachi bands for a full-day clinic and concert, and will
offer a Children’s Concert along with its July 4th Extravaganza.
On June 24, the Mariachi Fest will include a one-day mariachi clinic to
students of all ages and musical backgrounds. The clinics will be offered to
musicians who have an interest in learning or expanding their individual
mariachi musicianship utilizing trumpet, violin, guitar, vihuela, guitarron,
and voice. The day-long clinic will be held at CSU-Pueblo. An evening
performance featuring clinicians and students will be at the Sangre de
Cristo Arts and Conference Center. Last year’s event drew a standing room
only crowd, so arrive early! The featured clinicians and performers will be
Mariachi Tenampa from Albuquerque and Mariachi Acoiris.
The 101st Army Band will set a patriotic tone at the popular July 4th
Extravaganza before an hour-long fireworks show sponsored by the local
Sertoma Club, while the University will coordinate food and beverage vendors
for attendees. More than 17,000 people attended last year’s Independence Day
activities, and it remains the only fireworks show in town on this national
holiday. A free Children’s Concert by Bonnie Phipps will begin in Hoag Hall
at 5 p.m. before the outdoor concert at 7 p.m. Parking is $5 per carload,
which benefits Sertoma charities.
