Colorado State University – Pueblo Engineering Students win regional design contest

Pueblo-
A design team from Student Chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) at Colorado State University – Pueblo recently captured first place in a competition to design and build a mechanical transportation device as part of the Regional Student Conference (RSC) at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

The annual event provides ASME student chapters from 22 universities throughout Utah, Colorado, Arizona, East Texas, New Mexico, and Northern Mexico the opportunity to meet and compete in four events: a technical design contest, technical oral presentation, technical website design, and technical poster presentation. Among the schools in the competition were CSU – Fort Collins, Brigham Young University, Metro State College of Denver, the University of Arizona, Utah State, Arizona State and Tecnologico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey.

This year, 11 CSU-Pueblo students attended. Two teams competed in the design competition which entailed designing and building a mechanical device that would transport as much “ore” (rice) as possible over a series of steps, deposit the “ore,” and return for a reload.

The design team of Mike Long of Fowler, Erick Andersen of Fort Collins, and Brandon Van Buskirk and Brandon Smith, both of Pueblo, captured first place. The students were awarded a cash prize and paid travel to the International Competition at Disney World in November. The team plans to improve their design in the hopes of placing first at the International Competition.

In the past three conferences, ASME students from CSU-Pueblo have won first place twice and garnered a third in the design contest against students from schools such as CSU-Fort Collins, BYU, Utah State, Colorado School of Mines, Arizona University, and New Mexico State University.
