Colorado State University – Pueblo
announces Winners of Women’s Poetry Contest
Pueblo- Female poets from throughout Southern Colorado recently competed
in the 10th Annual Women’s Poetry Contest sponsored by the Colorado State
University – Pueblo Women’s Studies Program, English Department, University
Library, Office of Student Life, Provost’s Office, and the College of
Humanities and Social Sciences in honor of Women’s History Month. The
contest consisted of four divisions – open, college, high school, and middle
school.
Winners in the open division were Sandy Hudock, 1st Place for “Celestial
Navigation;” Javairia Rani Heavenly Earth, 2nd Place for “The Distance of
Bodies in Arroyo Honda, New Mexico;” and Kyle Laws, 3rd Place for
“Line/Circle: Paris, 60th Anniversary of D-Day.” Patricia Mellon-Moore and
Wendy Shinn received Honorable Mention for “Notes” and “Noisy Night Kitty,”
respectively.
The college division winners were CSU-Pueblo students Wanda Huber, 1st Place
for “Blood Knots;” and Lydia Hunter, 2nd Place for “Wind.” Third Place went
to Rhonda Turner from Pueblo Community College for “And Now You are Gone,”
and “Our Story.” CSU-Pueblo students Lynn Kay and Elizabeth Wade received
Honorable Mention for “American History” and “Leslie,” respectively.
Winners in the high school division were Shawntell Taylor, Central High
School, 1st Place for “Soaked,” “Halls are Swallowing,” and “Restitution;”
Karina Hoeppner, East High School, 2nd Place for “Desert Dystopia;” and
Bettina Spence, Centennial High School, 3rd Place for “Feeling Alone,
Feeling Alive.” Honorable Mention went to Megan Jackson, East High School,
for “Intriguing Mysteries,” and Amy Jo Wiley, Centennial High School, for “I
am Woman.”
Middle school winners were Emily Albo, Pueblo School for Arts and Sciences (PSAS),
1st Place for “Friends;” Brittany Benegas, Futures Academy, 2nd Place for
“The Blue Sky Whispers;” and Tamara Corley, Pitts Middle School, 3rd Place
for “Spiraling.” Honorable Mention was received by Katherine Axiotis, PSAS,
for “My Paradise;” Christina Colalancia, Pitts Middle School, for
“9/11/2001;” and Keila Gutierrez, McClelland School, for “Friends.”
The contest judge was renowned Chicana poet Lorna Dee Cervantes, an
associate professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
