Pueblo-
The Department of Mathematics and Physics at Colorado State University - Pueblo has announced the results from the 28th Annual Math Day Swanson and Math Bowl competitions, held on campus Thursday, November 18.

The following high schools participated in Math Day activities: Air Academy, Antonito, Canon City, Centauri, Centennial (San Luis Valley), Pueblo Central, Coronado, Doherty, Pueblo East, Ellicott, Florence, Fountain-Fort Carson, Kim, Liberty, Mesa Ridge, Mitchell, Pine Creek, Pritchard, Pueblo Centennial, Rampart, Rangely, Rocky Ford, Rye, Pueblo South, Swink, Wasson, and Widefield. Other Math Day activities included physic demonstrations, guided tours of the Life Science Lab facilities as well as visits to the botany and chemistry labs.

The Math Bowl Competition requires two three-person teams to go head-to-head in a 15-minute race for points. Each team is alternately given a mathematical question and has 25 seconds to respond. The team with the most points then goes to the semi-final round to determine the winner.

The 2004 Math Bowl winner is Mitchell High School, featuring team members Bryce Herdt, Michael McMonigle and Chris Owen. Swink High School placed second in the competition with team members Shane Murphy, Emily Hiza and Dave Sumpter. Semifinalists were Ellicott High School with team members Adam David, Quoc Le and Andrew Perryman; and Canon City High School with team members Dustin McCurry, Evan Yost and Kelsey Zabrusky. Consolation went to Rampart High School with team members Ken Latimer, Matt Murphy and Vinnie Weiss.

This year, 179 high school students took the Swanson Competition exam. The Swanson Competition was named after Clarence Swanson, a long-time chair of the math department.
