Colorado State University – Pueblo to celebrate Día de los Muertos on Nov. 1

Pueblo-
Dia de los Muertos – or Day of the Dead – will be celebrated with two ceremonies and a number of activities at Colorado State University – Pueblo on Monday, Nov. 1.

CSU-Pueblo’s Dia de los Muertos celebrations will take place from noon to 2 p.m. and again from 5 to 8 p.m. The noon celebration will be held in front of the University Library, while the evening celebration will take place at the Occhiato University Center (OUC) with a non-denominational, candle-light prayer vigil in the Fountain area. Participants are encouraged to bring pictures of their loved ones who have passed on to the evening prayer vigil. The event is sponsored by CSU-Pueblo’s Chicano Studies and Spanish programs, M.E.Ch.A., and Catholic Student Union.

Both celebrations will include Aztec dancers, free pan de muerto (a round, sweet bread sprinkled with sugar), information about the tradition of Dia de los Muertos, and a tamale and T-shirt sale. A 20-minute film on the meaning of Dia de los Muertos will be shown throughout the day in the OUC Galleria Pequeña Room.

The campus will have four altars on display; in the lower level of the Psychology Building; on the first floor of the University Library; outside the University Library; and inside the OUC.

Dia de los Muertos is traditionally a day set aside to remember those who have passed on. The celebration dates back to the pre-Hispanic cultures of Meso-America and the indigenous people such as the Aztecs and Mayans. Traditionally, the celebration takes place in a cemetery with the deceased as the guest of honor.

Today, Dia de los Muertos is celebrated throughout Mexico and in the Southwest region of the United States. The celebration usually includes an altar, pictures of loved ones who have passed on, and sometimes even humor – such as laughing in the face of death – without disrespect.
