Colorado State University - Pueblo
Reception Honors Work of Bernice Zamora
Pueblo- The Chicano Studies Program and University Library at Colorado
State University – Pueblo will sponsor a reception next week to honor Dr.
Bernice Zamora’s internationally recognized literary work. The reception
will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 18 on the third floor of the
University Library. The event is open to the public at no charge.
According to event organizer, Dora Luz Cobian, associate professor of
English and foreign languages at CSU-Pueblo, the evening will be a treat not
only because of the opportunity to meet and learn about Zamora’s work, but
because Lorna Dee Cervantes, professor at CU- Boulder, a renowned poet
herself, and Dr. Luis Torres, professor of Chicano studies at Metro State
College of Denver, will perform Zamora’s work.
Zamora was born in Aguilar and raised in Pueblo. She attended CSU-Fort
Collins and Stanford University. Although she has explored many genres of
writing, Zamora prefers poetry. Her work is most significantly influenced by
the Chicano Movement, the attempt by members of the Chicano community to
organize local and regional concerns with the common goal of empowerment.
Cobian said Zamora’s work is especially important to Coloradans because it
reflects Colorado’s way of life and because it serves as an example for the
Chicana/Latina community. A display on the first floor of the University
Library includes samples of poetry by Zamora and others.
For more information on the event or Zamora, contact Cobian at 549-2537.
