Colorado State University – Pueblo names Tony Montoya as Director of Campus Diversity

Pueblo-
The new Director of Campus Diversity at Colorado State University-Pueblo brings to the post nearly 25 years of experience in human relations, multicultural affairs, Affirmative Action, and Colorado higher education administration. Tony Montoya will begin his duties on Monday, October 4.

As director, Montoya is responsible for creating, implementing, managing and monitoring the University’s Multicultural Center and the Affirmative Action/Equal opportunity policies and programs, ensuring compliance with federal and state statutes as well as institutional policy. As head of the Multicultural Center, he will provide academic, social, and transition support for students from historically underrepresented populations and international students. The Center will be one of the building blocks that enables CSU-Pueblo to achieve its goal of becoming the premiere Hispanic Serving Institution in the West.

“I look forward to further developing student programming and services for CSU-Pueblo students and significantly improving the retention and graduation rates of underrepresented students,” Montoya said. “I am also excited about broadening relationships with the business community to facilitate the creation of mentoring and internship opportunities for students.”

Montoya also mentioned that he was encouraged by the fact that CSU-Pueblo is a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) and is committed to maintaining that designation and continuing to recruit, retain, and graduate Hispanic students.

Prior to joining CSU-Pueblo as Director of the Veterans Upward Bound program earlier this year, Montoya spent two years as Assistant Vice President of Multicultural Affairs at the University of Northern Colorado, where he managed four cultural centers, three federally funded grant programs for first generation low-income students, and CUMBRES Program, a teacher preparation program for Latinos. He also developed and implemented a campus-wide comprehensive cultural diversity plan. His department provided advising, tutoring, mentoring, orientation and special recognition for academic achievement and graduation, and he also was involved in the development of community coalitions with minority organizations at the local and national levels.

During more than 20 years as an administrator at Metropolitan State College of Denver, Montoya was involved in handling complaints filed by students, staff and faculty, and managed the grievance process for the school. He also assisted the EO Officer with investigating complaints, conducting hearings, and mediation and directed the Summer Bridge Program, which assisted first-time students and adult students returning to college. He also served as President of the Hispanic Faculty/Staff Association.

In the Denver community, Montoya was appointed to the Teacher/Special Services Professional Standards Board and served as chair of the Hispanic Education Advisory Council for the Denver Public School District.

Montoya earned a bachelor’s degree in management with a minor in Spanish from Metropolitan State College of Denver and a master’s degree in public administration from CUNY-Bernard Baruch College in New York City. He also holds a certificate in human resources and equal opportunity from the race Relationship Institute in Orlando, Florida.
