CSU-Pueblo’s Naylon Named Sheriff Department’s Civilian of the Year

PUEBLO – Because of his efforts with the development of the substation of the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Department on the Colorado State University – Pueblo campus and his daily professionalism, CSU-Pueblo Police Communication Technician Dennis Naylon was recently selected the Civilian Of The Year by the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Department. Naylon was honored for his outstanding service and professionalism by Sheriff Dan Corsentino as part of the department’s annual awards ceremony in May.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office presents five annual awards: Uniformed Officer, Non-Uniformed Member, Unit Meritorious, Volunteer and Civilian. Nominations are due each January. An awards committee presents their selections to the Sheriff for his final approval.

Pueblo County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Bruce Cooper nominated Naylon for the honor after working closely with him for the past five years and admiring Naylon’s dedication and attitude.

“Throughout his years of service for the University, Dennis has helped the Sheriff’s Office with the transition and the day to day processes of how the University works. Without his help, the transition would not have been as successful and as easy,” said Cooper. “On a day to day basis, Dennis is always 30 minutes early to his job and always arrives with a smile. Dennis is always there to help with any matter involving the Parking Department or the Police unit.”

Cooper also credits Naylon with nurturing the many students who he has recruited to work in the campus office, many of whom eventually enter the law enforcement profession.

In 2002, the University entered an agreement with the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office to oversee campus law enforcement. Enhanced services included 24-hour, seven-day coverage, community policing, campus bike patrols, special event security, victim’s assistance and investigative support, as well as immediate response and support by state certified peace officers.

“ It was a humbling and rewarding experience to be recognized for doing your job,” said Naylon.

Naylon has been with the University since 1992, starting his career in the security office, then moving to the University bookstore for a few years, before returning to the Pueblo Sheriff’s Campus Office.
