CSU - Pueblo to host Social Commentator Jello Biafra
Pueblo -- Renowned social
commentator and word artist Jello Biafra will perform live at Colorado State
University - Pueblo at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 19 in the Occhiato University
Center Ballroom.
Biafra is a former lead singer and songwriter for the punk band Dead Kennedys.
He began his spoken word career in early 1986 when he found himself in the role
of spokesperson on censorship and First Amendment rights during the Dead
Kennedys "Frankenchrist" trial - the first case in history to try a
recorded work for obscenity. Numerous albums later, this former green party
presidential nominee and former San Francisco mayoral candidate continues to be
a high profile political speaker. The founder of Alternative Tentacles Records,
Biafra believes strongly in civil liberties and vigorously promotes
individualism and freedom of artistic expression in all mediums.
Following the events of September 11, 2001, Biafra received requests for his
take on the political situation. His response, "Big Ka-Boom, Part
One," was recorded in November that year. In "Big Ka-Boom, Part
One," Biafra digs up the dirt on President Bush's staff and covers
historical events that may have contributed to the attacks. His most recent
release, "Machine Gun in the Clown's Hand," expands on these topics.
Biafra's live performance at CSU-Pueblo is open to the public and free of
charge.
