CSU - Pueblo to host Seminar on Electrical Grids and Blackouts
Pueblo -- The technological
shortcomings of the electrical grid and the recent Northeast blackout will be
the subject of a seminar on Thursday, September 25 by Dr. Howard Hayden,
Emeritus Professor of Physics from the University of Connecticut and Adjunct
Professor of Physics at CSU-Pueblo. The lecture will be held from noon to 12:50
p.m. in Physics/Math 103.
"The blackout of August 14, 2003 reminded us of what engineers have been
saying for decades - the electrical grid has some serious shortcomings,"
said Hayden. "The overall reliance of the grid is 99.9 percent, even though
the blackout reduced the reliability figure for the Eastern Grid to 99 percent
for the year," he added.
Hayden will discuss the technological infrastructure of future grids and the
possibility of using remote sensors to better isolate problems when they occur.
Hayden has been interested in energy related technological issues for many years
and maintains The Energy Advocate website at www.energyadvocate.com.
