Pueblo -- The University of Southern
Colorado will host 39 college-bound high school students participating in the
Daniels College Prep and Scholarship Program this week. The visiting students
will conduct biology experiments in USC labs and will perform 270 hours of
volunteer work in Pueblo non-profit agencies, according to Deborah
Martinez-Martinez, USC campus coordinator.
Hyde Park Community Center and El Pueblo History Museum will receive the
volunteer assistance. At Hyde Park, under the leadership of Sandy Daff, Program
Coordinator for Neighborhood Housing Services, the students will paint two small
murals to dress up the community center. At the El Pueblo History Museum, at
Victoria and First Street, the students will assist in a general clean-up for
the opening of the new building.
The Daniels College Prep and Scholarship Program is the legacy of cable
television entrepreneur Bill Daniels, according to Miguel Lovato, Daniels Fund
program coordinator. "The Daniels College Prep and Scholarship Program was
created out of Daniels' desire to make a difference in the lives of deserving
young people," he said.
Many of the students aspire to science careers," said Martinez-Martinez.
"The students will have the use of the University's biology research
laboratory under the direction of Dr.Dan Caprioglio, USC associate professor of
biology," she added.
These inner-city students were chosen for participation in the program based on
academic promise, financial need, strength of character, and evidence of
leadership potential," said Lovato.
