USC announces History Day - state competition results, 2003

Pueblo -- For the second year running, students from a District 70 charter school placed at the state level for the National History Day competition at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and are eligible to participate in national competition at the University of Maryland, College Park, June 15-19.

Connect School students Ashley Barker, Shaina Beaudin, and Raquel Fuentes earned second place at the junior level (grades 6-8) for their group exhibit "Mining: Mineral Rights and Responsibilities to the Environment."

The three students follow in the footsteps of Amy Jo Wiley, a Connect School student who placed second last year at state and went on to national competition with her individual exhibit, "Mill Girls Revolution."

Several other entries were recognized for high quality at this year's state competition. Third place winners were Kristen Stephens, for a junior-level paper, and Marc Luce, T.C. Harrison, and Daniel Kinnett, for a junior-level group exhibit. In addition, Honorable Mentions were awarded to Lauren Emory, Devin Alfonso, and Wesley Reed for a junior-level group exhibit, and to Zach Collier for a junior-level individual media entry.

Students competed based on their research into a topic of their choosing, related to the national theme this year of "Rights and Responsibilities in History." They presented their research as a paper, and exhibit, or a documentary.

An additional 21 students, from Connect School, Canon City Middle School, La Junta Middle School, and Granada High School, who had been winners in the History Day competition in Pueblo in March presented individual or group entries at state: Anna Boyd, Brooks Brumfield, Dan Cleaver, Brian Cordova, Tyler DuVall, Hannah Evans, Jaclynn Gazette, Emma Goerlich, Mark Grasmick, Leah Jarvis, Kazia Marshall, Kenny Medina, Mitch Montoya, Marie Newby, Alison Panza, Cody Smith, Tyler Spinuzzi, Mick Stachler, Kyle Torres, Amanda Van Dyke, and Zack Vencius.
