USC Nursing Honor Society honors
outstanding Nurses

The Nursing Department and the Iota Pi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor
Society at the University of Southern Colorado recognized four outstanding
nurses and inducted 14 nursing students during a recent awards banquet at the
Union Depot.
Nurses Mike Vislosky, Sandra Nebl, Barbara Sabo and Eileen Dennis were
recognized as outstanding nurses whose contributions to nursing fulfill the
goals of Sigma Theta Tau. The four received awards of excellence and were
inducted into the Hall of Excellence.
Pueblo Native Mike Vislosky, a critical care nurse practitioner at St. Mary
Corwin Medical Center, received the Hall of Excellence Award for Research.
Vislosky attended Harvard Medical School before choosing a career in nursing.
While still in high school, Vislosky worked as an orderly, later completing
degrees in both physiology and nursing. He has conducted research in the area of
cardiac nursing and published multiple articles related to his work. He chaired
the Medical Ethics Committee for seven years and currently is a member of
Centura Health's ethics committee.
Sandra Nebl, acute care nurse practitioner, received the Hall of Excellence
Award in Clinical Practice. With more than 20 years of experience in local
health care, Nebl has functioned at various levels of nursing, including
emergency medical technician, staff nurse, emergency room director and chief
nursing officer. An acute care nurse practitioner in a cardiac surgery practice,
she is recognized as a role model and mentor for many staff nurses.
USC Professor of Nursing Barbara Sabo earned the Excellence in Teaching Award.
Sabo has taught, consulted, and developed curriculum and instruction in all
areas of basic clinical practice and nursing theory. Her teaching expertise
includes development of an auto-tutorial program, database nursing program,
management program, and computer-assisted learning program. She has coordinated
a multi agency RN refresher system. She has administrative, clinical and
teaching experiences at all levels of nursing. Sabo was most recently recognized
for Excellence in Service to the University at USC.
Pueblo Native Eileen Dennis was recognized for Excellence in Leadership. The
County High School graduate has worked at all levels of nursing and hospital
administration, and is recognized for leadership and administration at the
local, regional, and national levels. She is a member of multiple boards and
organizations and participates in numerous community activities. Dennis has
mentored many of Pueblo's nursing leaders, and continues to support their growth
and development.
USC senior nursing students inducted into the Honor Society were Melissa
Dominguez, Jaydee Gacewicz, Kerrie Gutierrez, Phillip Knowles, Kristine Lungu,
Fusae Moriguchi, Shannon Tabor, and Maria Telfer.
USC junior nursing students inducted were Julie Andron, Naomi Cherry, Meghann
Donovan, Rene Johnson, Christine Lukowitz, and Karla Richarson-Trujillo.
Val Medina, nurse recruiter for Parkview Medical Center, received the chapter's
Friend of Nursing Award.
