honors outstanding faculty and staff
Pueblo -- The University of Southern
Colorado recognized outstanding faculty and the outstanding employees during the
Inaugural Faculty-Staff Recognition Luncheon on Wednesday, April 23.
Dr. Roger Johnson, professor of mathematics, received the Excellence in Teaching
Award. USC Provost Barbara Montgomery credited Johnson with setting high
standards and establishing a reputation as an exceptional classroom teacher.
Dr. George Dallam, assistant professor of Exercise Science and Recreation,
received the Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award. Dallam was credited for
research in human performance and for meaningful application of his expertise in
a laboratory setting.
Dr. Barbara Sabo earned the Faculty Excellence Award in Service. Montgomery
praised her service on numerous boards and committees, and as sponsor of the
Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society. "Dr. Sabo's years of service to the
University, our students and the community have been invaluable," said
Montgomery.
Also honored at the event were the Outstanding Faculty award recipients.
Dr. Carol Foust, chair of exercise science, health promotion and recreation, was
selected from the College of Education, Engineering, and Professional Studies
for making "a significant impact at all levels of the institution." In
addition to excelling in teaching and publications, Foust co-authored grant
proposals leading to more than $250,000.
From the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. David Keplinger,
assistant professor of English and foreign languages, was honored for innovative
teaching, internationally recognized scholarly and creative activity, and
service to the University. Keplinger was honored for a redesign of the Creative
Writing Program, organizing readings by on-campus and visiting writers, and
advising students seeking publication or admission to graduate programs.
Dr. Kevin Duncan was selected from the Hasan School of Business for his current
and demanding courses, including an advanced research project that impacts
economic development in Southern Colorado. He recently co-authored a study of
the significant economic impact of non-profit organizations on the Pueblo
economy.
The College of Science and Mathematics honored Dr. David Lehmpuhl, assistant
professor of chemistry, for the unique challenges he offers his students,
including a contest to identify components of an unknown medicine from a foreign
country. He has been involves with curriculum development for the new forensic
science emphasis and plays an active role in the Chemistry Club.
Professor Sandy Hudock was honored by the University Library for consistent
demonstrations of excellence in her roles as computer services librarian,
interlibrary loan librarian, distance services librarian and reference
librarian. Hudock also was recognized for successful grant writing, service on
numerous committees, and tireless enthusiasm to improve library services.
Lia Sissom, assistant to the dean, Hasan School of Business, was recognized as
the University's Outstanding Employee for 2003. The outstanding employee is
selected by a campus wide committee from nominations based on outstanding
accomplishment, initiative, performance as a team player, commitment to USC, a
positive attitude an a commitment to personal and professional growth.
Also recognized at the event was Outstanding Classified Employee Robert Tucker,
state service assistant in the Office of Human Resources. Tucker was honored for
his role in implementing the pay for performance system for classified
employees.
USC President Ron Applbaum also recognized retiring employees, faculty receiving
emeritus status, community members named New Generation of Leaders by The Pueblo
Chieftain, and individuals who received national recognition during the year for
service, scholarship or outstanding performance.
