Device to assist quadriplegic artists designed by USC students

Pueblo -- A device designed by mechanical engineering technology students at the University of Southern Colorado will allow a quadriplegic artist to control the position of a painting in progress.

Operated by puffs of air from the artist's mouth, the easel uses a motor to move a painting up and down so that the artist can access each area of the canvass. Previously, a quadriplegic artist had to have the canvass moved by hand.

The automatic easel will be demonstrated today (April 7) at 1:30 p.m. in 220 Technology and will be presented to a representative from Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., which specializes in rehabilitation and research for patients with spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.

The University of Southern Colorado is a regional, comprehensive university emphasizing professional, career-oriented, and applied programs. Displaying excellence in teaching, celebrating diversity, and engaging in service and outreach, USC is distinguished by access, opportunity, and the overall quality of services provided to its students.
