                 USC joins American/Chinese leadership training program

Pueblo -- The University of Southern Colorado has been selected as one of 12 U.S. institutions of higher education to participate in an international leadership-training project between the U.S. and China.

USC President Ronald Applbaum will travel to China this fall as part of the Sino-American Leadership Initiative, a collaborative effort between the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and the Chinese Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE).

Applbaum will receive an orientation in Beijing and participate in a two-week intensive program of study and training at an exchange partner campus. Six participating Chinese university administrators will begin their orientation to higher education in the U.S. later this month in Washington, D.C. USC will host its Chinese visitors during the spring 2004 semester. The project links Chinese and American universities by providing opportunities for programmatic development and expanding relationships for faculty/student exchanges.

"This program provides our campus with an tremendous opportunity to exchange ideas and perspectives with universities in China," said USC President Ronald Applbaum. "Our students and faculty will gain exposure to a more global perspective with regard to higher education and a greater knowledge of and respect for other cultures. This collaboration is a highly visible representation of our ongoing commitment to diversity in all its forms."

The 12 AASCU members involved in this phase of the AASCU program are Cleveland State University (Ohio), Emporia State University (Kans.), Longwood University (Va.), Middle Tennessee State University, Northeastern Illinois University, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Sam Houston State University (Texas), Stephen F. Austin University (Texas), University of Alaska - Anchorage, University of North Alabama, University of Southern Colorado, University of West Florida, Washburn University of Topeka (Kans.)
