University of Southern Colorado
student radio station rated Number One
Pueblo -- The University of Southern
Colorado's student-run radio station, KTSC-FM REV 89 was recently rated the
number one non-commercial station in the United States during 2002, according to
the latest Arbitron research provided by the Mass Communications Department and
Center for New Media.
REV 89 captured a greater percentage of listeners in their broadcast area than
any of the other 2,399 nonprofit, educational, religious or national public
radio stations in the nation. Two ratings periods occurred in 2002 with REV
ranking first place in both periods. The ratings are available online at www.rrconline.org/reports.
Staffed by mass communications students 24 hours a day, seven days a week, REV
89 serves as a media lab in the broadcast curriculum of the mass communications
department. Typical listeners are men and women aged 12 to 34.
"The hands-on experience in actual working environments is a real benefit
to our students and one of the hallmarks of the mass communications program at
USC," said Jennifer Mullen, mass communications department chair.
"The rating is particularly significant because of the national scope of
the competition," said Station Manager Sam Lovato, who noted that while
many NPR, religious, nonprofit, and educational radio stations have full-time,
professional staff and extensive budgets, REV 89 relies on part-time student
workers with the majority of funding coming from underwriting. The station is in
the process of raising funds for a new antenna and transmitter. Interested
persons may contact Lovato at 549-2821.
