USC hosts Engineering Science and Technology
Design Contest at Pueblo Mall
Pueblo -- A record 126 teams and more than 500
students from 25 middle and high schools across Colorado have entered the 9th
Annual University of Southern Colorado Engineering, Science and Technology
Design Contest. The competition, designed to challenge students' critical
thinking, teamwork and creative design skills, will take place at the Pueblo
Mall on March 8.
Six different individual competitions, requiring prior designs, evaluate
student-produced projects in areas like bridge construction, egg drop
containers, mousetrap cars and catapults, website development and onsite
construction. Student-built projects are tested against specific performance
criteria. Two additional impromptu strategy events further test students'
ability to communicate, problem solve and rapidly construct workable solutions
when presented with challenges the day of the competition.
The contest preliminaries were held recently in the Technology Building on the
USC campus. Teams will test their designs and strategies for the final
competition on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pueblo Mall. During the
final, four-member teams compete for the top three places in eight individual
events in both middle and high school divisions, as well as for overall middle
and high school team awards. Top finishers receive technical calculators and
other prizes provided by local merchants during the awards ceremony scheduled
for 5 pm at the Mall.
Faculty and student clubs within the USC College of Education, Engineering, and
Professional Studies will conduct the event which is sponsored and supported by
numerous local businesses including: Abel Engineering Professionals, Inc.,
Goodrich Corporation, H.W. Houston Construction, CTL Thompson, Inc., NorthStar
Engineering & Surveying, Inc., Wells Fargo Bank, The Trane Company, The
Boeing Company and the Pueblo Mall.
