USC embraces diversity with Coming Out Week events

Pueblo -- In recognition of Coming Out Week, the University of Southern Colorado Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender organization, One in Ten, will host a series of free events on campus.

At 7 p.m, Thursday, (Oct. 10) author and former major league umpire Dave Pallone, will speak in the ballroom of the Occhiato University Center. Pallone is the author of the 1990 New York Time's best-selling autobiography, Behind the Mask: My Double Life in Baseball, which offers a look at baseball through the eyes of a gay man. Through his work with corporations, universities, colleges, and the general public, Pallone has helped to educate and enlighten people to the reality of sexual orientation, a not-so-openly-discussed topic.

Dr. Fred Stultz, interim director of the Student Counseling Center, will discuss Dispelling the Myths at noon on Friday, (Oct. 11) in the Hearthwell Lounge of the Occhiato Center. Stultz will present an informative speech on the homosexual/ bisexual lifestyle, followed by a question and answer session. Possible handouts might include a mini-quiz that tests the attendees' knowledge of facts, versus their belief in myths.

Also on Friday, a Drag Show will be offered from 8 to 9 p.m. in the Hearthwell Lounge, with contestants from both the USC and Pueblo communities, performing musical entertainment (lip-synching, or karaoke) in full drag. The Grand Prize winner will be crowned and presented with a prize package.

A Homecoming-OUT Dance will take place in the OUC Ballroom on Saturday from 9 p.m. until midnight with entertainment provided by a live DJ. The event is open to all; free to USC students; $3 per person and $5 per couple for non-USC students.

The University of Southern Colorado is a regional, comprehensive university emphasizing professional, career-oriented and applied programs. Displaying excellence in teaching, celebrating diversity, and engaging in service and outreach, USC is distinguished by access, opportunity and the overall quality of services provided to its students.
