USC Sociologist wins Fulbright Award
Dr. Timothy McGettigan, Assistant Professor of Sociology, was selected for a
Fulbright Hayes award and is spending the 2002-03 academic year teaching at the
Central European University in Warsaw, Poland. During his Fulbright year,
Professor McGettigan will teach sociology and continue his research on poverty
issues.
Questionnaire assesses strategic management
shifts
Drs. Ahmadian and Regassa of the Hasan School of Business have developed a
questionnaire that will target Fortune 500 companies and their response to the
changes in the current economic environment. The project will assess whether
there are strategic shifts in management, marketing, and finance in light of the
current accounting irregularities, governance structures, CEO compensation,
agency problems and the like.
Professor wins Columbian National Fellowship
Dr. Flor-Maria Rodriguez-Arenas has won a Colombian National Fellowship from
the Mineserio de Cultura-Colombia that supports her research in
nineteenth-century Latin American fiction. Professor Rodriguez-Arenas, a native
of Colombia, was selected from among 2000 applicants. The Fellowship includes a
30 million peso award and four trips to Columbia to participate in symposia and
research during the 2002-03 academic year.
Three year grant targets diabetes
Dr. Carol Foust and Dr. George Dallam of Exercise Science, Health Promotion,
and Recreation (EXHPR) co-authored a three-year grant that has been funded by
the Colorado Trust for a total of $233,849. The funding will be used to
implement a series of educational programs focused on the prevention of Type 2
diabetes. The grant proposal represents a collaborative effort of the University
of Southern Colorado (USC) EXHPR Department, the USC Nursing Department and
Parkview Medical Center in partnership with the Pueblo Chieftain Newspaper. The
USC EXHPR Department will take leadership in the implementation of the project.
In the first year of implementation, Pueblo Chieftain employees will serve as
the target population. During the second and third years of the grant,
additional Pueblo area employers will partner with the project and receive
similar education and prevention services.
Study of Southeastern Colorado recreation needs
planned
Dr. Jeff Stuyt, Assistant Professor Exercise Science, Health Promotion and
Recreation, met with representatives of the CSU Department of Local Affairs
(Community Technical Assistance Program), the City Council of Trinidad and the
County Commissioners of Las Animas County to approve plans for a study of
recreation needs. A survey was approved to determine citizens' needs for parks,
fitness centers, trails, and special events. In the same week, sponsorship was
obtained from San Isabel Electric Company in Pueblo to fund this project.
Southern Colorado Magazine
The faculty and students in English 440, Magazine Writing, have produced an
on-line publication, Southern Colorado Magazine. This magazine, a prototype for
a projected print version, features stories focused on the southeastern Colorado
region, and is a collaborative venture by students in English and Mass
Communication led by two English faculty members, lecturer Chas Clifton and
assistant professor David Keplinger. Twelve of the 13 feature articles in the
magazine are written by students, one by Professor Keplinger. The Department of
English will continue producing the on-line magazine in English 440, involving
students in actually writing, editing and producing a professional-quality
