Pastel Paintings and Figure Drawings Exhibited at USC Gallery
Pueblo, Colo. -- The University of Southern Colorado Art Gallery will
exhibit the pastel paintings of Christopher Asheton-Stones and the figure
drawings of Charles Waldo Love from Monday, Sept. 16 until Friday, Oct. 11. The
Gallery is located in the University's Capps Capozzolo Center.
Christopher Asheton-Stones' work ranges from conventional landscapes to modern
abstracts created later in his life. Asheton-Stones spent much of his career
trying to mainstream the use of pastels in painting and making the medium
equivalent to traditional painting materials. Asheton-Stones' pastel paintings
are donated by his cousin, Joan Wolther.
Charles Waldo Love is widely known for the backgrounds he painted for exhibits
in the Denver Museum of Natural History. Love was born in Washington D.C. and
later moved to Denver, where he studied at Reed Art School. Love later studied
in New York and Paris. The figure drawings exhibited at the gallery were created
between 1901 and 1902.
Love's drawings were donated to USC in 1992 by Mary Love Cornish, the artist's
daughter. Love's grandson, the late Dr. Alan Love, is the former dean of the
College of Humanities and Social Sciences at USC.
On October 5, the gallery will be open to the public from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.,
prior to a performance by the Pueblo Symphony. A wine reception also will be
held during intermission of the performance. Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment.
