USC community
remembers 9-11 through series of events
Pueblo, Colo. -- A series of memorial activities titled "Healing
America's Spirit" will take place next week on the University of Southern
Colorado campus as the USC community remembers the events of September 11, 2001.
An all-campus memorial service will take place at noon,
Wednesday, September 11, at the Fountain Plaza with remarks by faculty, student,
and classified staff representatives as well as USC President Ronald Applbaum.
Also represented will be the Sheriff's Department at USC and the University's
music department.
Students have planned a memorial tribute to be held at
9:11 a.m. at the 9/11-memorial site on the north side of campus. The tribute
will include an ROTC Honor Guard, the placing of wreaths and lighting of
candles. A banner signing, displays, and presentations by American Red Cross
volunteers will be featured from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Occhiato Center
Colorado Ballroom. From noon to 4 p.m., Bonfils Blood Center will conduct a
memorial blood drive in the Occhiato Center Hearthwell Lounge. Appointments are
recommended by calling 549-2151.
"We will honor the memory of the many victims of the
terrorist attack," said Applbaum. "From this incredible tragedy, we
have gained a greater appreciation and admiration for the hand that reaches out
to others who are in need. Let us continue to show respect for the firefighters,
police officers, military and medical personnel who continue to work around the
clock to make our lives more secure."
USC Provost Barbara Montgomery has encouraged faculty
members to engage students in discussions of the tragedy and the changes it has
brought to our lives.
"What have we learned about our national identity,
values, policies and practices?" asked Montgomery, "What changes in
these fundamental aspects of being United States Citizens have happened over the
past year because of 9-11?"
