PUEBLOANS PLACE IN STATE HISTORY DAY COMPETITION
Pueblo, Colo. - A Pueblo middle school student captured first place in the
recent Seventh Annual Colorado History Day State Competition. Amy Wiley, an
eighth-grader at Connect School in Pueblo School District No. 70, received first
place for her exhibit titled "The Incredible Mill Girl Revolution."
Wiley will travel to the national competition at the University of Maryland,
College Park in June.
Connect School students Rick Luce, Matt Karn and Chaz
Vaughn placed third in the junior group exhibit category for their exhibit
titled "Henry Ford." The third-place team will be eligible for the
nationals if either the first or second-place winners are unable to participate.
Both winning entries at Connect School were supported by
their teacher Dana Ferguson, and co-directors Judy and John Mikulas, who all
have made History Day an integral part of the curriculum.
The program, sponsored by the University of Southern
Colorado and other area organizations and businesses, begins each fall with
workshops and materials, continues with individual and group research throughout
the year, and culminates in an optional series of annual competitions.
National History Day is a program designed to promote and
support history education at the secondary level throughout the country.
Students complete research on a topic related to a national theme, and present
the results of their research in a choice of formats including papers, exhibits,
performances and media presentations. This year's national theme was
"Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History."
