Regulation of MCT1 Function By Intracellular pH and cAMP analogs in Cerebrovascular Endothelial Cells

Monocarboxylic Acid Transporter 1 (MCT1) is expressed on the luminal and abluminal membranes of cerebrovascular endothelial cells where it is the sole transporter of monocarbox-ylic acids across the plasma membrane. Be-cause monocarboxylates, such as lactic acid, are important brain energy substrates and play important roles in brain pathologies, such as stroke, understanding factors that regulate MCT1 protein function is important for brain health and disease. In this study, we describe two distinctly different mechanisms of regulat-ing MCT1 in rat cerebrovascular endothelial cells. The first mechanism was changes in the intracellular pH which altered the driving force for lactate-proton co-transport. The second mechanism of regulating MCT1 was by treat-ment with membrane permeant cAMP analogs. Twenty minute exposure to 500 μM 8-Bromo-cAMP modulated MCT1 transport function by a mechanism that did not involve changes in cy-toplasmic pH. The Synthesis of Copper(I) Sensitive Fluorescent Compounds for Use in a Cellular System

Copper is an essential but toxic trace ele-ment in biological environments. It is know to be a factor in health and certain diseases. The ability to accurately detect and measure levels of copper in cellular systems would be benefi-cial in understanding normal and pathological aspects of copper. There has been limited work in the field of fluorescent copper sensors. Only a few of those are suitable for use in cel-lular imaging. The syntheses of some copper(I) sensitive fluorescent compounds are pre-sented. The compounds are designed to in-crease in fluorescence when bound to copper(I), which facilitates their use in biological im-aging. These compounds are based on a monoaza-tetrathia pseudo crown ethers and on the boron-dipyrrolemethene(BODIPY) fluorophore. The BODIPY core has many fa-vorable properties for use as a copper sensitive dye. The compounds presented contain modi-fications extending from this BODIPY core, thus changing the fluorescent properties as well as the physical properties to facilitate their use.

Breaking Down the Barriers, Hispanic (Chicano) Social Justice Activist Dolores Huerta, 8 a.m., Hoag Recital Hall
Huerta is the co-founder and Secretary-Treasurer of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO ("UFW"). The mother of 11 children, 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Dolores has played a major role in the American civil rights movement. As an advocate for farm worker rights Dolores has been arrested 22 times for non-violent peaceful union activities. In 1984, the California State Senate bestowed upon her the Outstanding Labor Leader Award. In 1993, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame and earned the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Roger Baldwin Medal of Liberty Award; and the Eugene V. Debs Foundation Outstanding American Award, and the Ellis Island Medal of Freedom Award.

Second City

The Second City Touring Company takes its act on the road throughout the year to venues all over the world. The four touring companies from the United States and the one from Canada perform "Best of Second City" revues featuring some of the greatest scenes, songs, and improvisations from the vast archives of The Second City.

The Second City also offers other touring shows such as special all improv shows, customized presentations, and specialty productions. From Universities to festivals to performing arts centers and theatres, The Second City Touring company plays a diverse array of venues.

A commanding presence on screen, stage and television for more than 25 years, Glover’s film credits range from the blockbuster Lethal Weapon franchise to smaller independent features, some of which Glover also produced. Most recently, he completed filming the critically acclaimed feature Dreamgirls directed by Bill Condon and Poor Boy`s Game for director Clement Virgo and Shooter for director Antoine Fuqua and Be Kind, Rewind for director Michel Gondry. At the same time, Glover has also gained respect for his wide-reaching community activism and philanthropic efforts, with a particular emphasis on advocacy for economic justice, and access to health care and education programs in the United States and Africa.

Truth and Reconciliation: Healing the Wounds of Racism

Nontombi Naomi Tutu, race and gender justice activist,
daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu

The challenges of growing up black and female in apartheid South Africa has led Naomi Tutu to her present role as an activist for human rights. Her experiences have taught her how much we all lose when any of us is judged purely on physical attributes. The third child of Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu, she was born in South Africa and has also lived in Lesotho, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Her speeches blend a passion for human dignity with humor and personal stories.

The Choice is only for the Women

Sarah Weddington, Roe vs. Wade attorney, women’s rights advocate
Women’s rights speaker and attorney Sarah Weddington successfully argued the landmark Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade, at the tender age of 26. She went on to be the first woman from Austin ever elected to the Texas House of Representatives, and later served as an assistant to President Jimmy Carter. She is the author of A Question of Choice, and currently teaches at the University of Texas. Weddington has received much recognition for her work, including the 2006 International Athena Award, which is presented to individuals who have achieved a high degree of excellence in their profession, and who have assisted women in reaching their full potential. Weddington chronicles the history of the modern women’s rights movement, reflects upon the advances women have made at all levels of society, and discusses the challenges that remain. Weddington also will be the keynote at the young woman’s conference the following day.
