Victoria Bonetto and Joshua Murphy named Student Leaders of the Year by the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation and the Boettcher Foundation
DENVER – The Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation (DMCLF), in partnership with the Boettcher Foundation, has named Victoria Bonetto, a student at Colorado State University at Pueblo, and Joshua Murphy, a student at the University of Colorado at Denver the Colorado Leadership Alliance (CLA) Student Leaders of the Year.
Beginning in 2009, the CLA and the Boettcher Foundation teamed up to select a student leader of the year from one of the 11 participating CLA campuses and universities. The CLA is one of the Leadership Foundation’s family of programs. The program provides development and programmatic support for its member programs in place on 11 campuses across Colorado.
Every year, each campus selects its own student leader and those students are interviewed by a panel of business and civic leaders at the CLA Summit in January. That panel then selects the overall Student Leader of the Year.
“The Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation is proud to partner with the Boettcher Foundation to award two deserving students with the 2012 Student Leaders of the Year Award,” said Maureen McDonald, executive director of the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation. “The selection committee chose Victoria and Joshua as this year’s winners because of the great impact they are making through their creative community work. Jason has parlayed his passion for skateboarding into an activity for at-risk children, and Victoria has volunteered to teach citizenship classes to immigrants, something she benefited from when she arrives in this country as a young teen.”
Bonetto was selected for the award because of her work in Pueblo incorporating new American citizens in a program helping students to improve their English language literacy.
“When you work so hard, sometimes it's nice to receive that recognition that just lets you know that you are on the right path and you need to keep on going,” she said.
Murphy has been mentoring children at the Grace Apartments in Denver, and said through that work he has proposed some experiential learning programs in the University Honors and Leadership Program at UCD.
“I am deeply honored to be co-selected as the 2012 Colorado Leadership Alliance Student Leader of the Year. Each of the nominees did and continues to do amazing work, so I am both extremely lucky and excited to have been chosen,” he said.
“The Boettcher Foundation is thrilled to honor both Joshua Murphy and Victoria Bonetto with the 2012 Student Leader of the Year Award,” said Katie Kramer, vice president and assistant executive director of the Boettcher Foundation. “These two students impressed us with their commitment to making a difference on their campuses and in their community, and we hope that their exceptional leadership serves as an inspiration to others.”
