Fitness Assessment

Fitness Assessments are offered FREE for students and Rec Center members.  Assessment opportunities are scheduled periodically throughout the semester (email notification and website postings) and can also be arranged by appointment. 

What is a Fitness Assessment? 

A fitness assessment is an individualized health/fitness appraisal of your CURRENT health & fitness status through a variety of physical fitness tests.  "CURRENT" meaning:  Information about WHERE you are NOW regarding personal health and fitness.  Assessments tests are a baseline for information.  Your results may be favorable, some may not.  The information received may be a big WAKE UP call – telling you that you need to do something for a healthier you – and set some personal goals. 
    Keep in mind – WHERE you are NOW does NOT determine your potential.

WHY do a fitness assessment (testing)? 

Assessment tests provide many benefits, including:
 -Establishing a client's current fitness status and providing baseline information.
 -Utilizing this information for comparison as client progresses and improves.
 -Serves as an educational and motivational tool.
 -Increases the likelihood of adherence and consistency.

WHAT will be done at the assessment? 

There are 5 components of fitness:  (Assessments should address these areas.)
 1) cardiorespiratory fitness
 2) muscular strength
 3) muscular endurance
 4) flexibility
 5) body composition. 

Your 'general' fitness assessment may include the following:
• Resting Hearth Rate and Blood Pressure
• Body Composition  - Weight & Height measurements and BMI (Body Mass Index)
 -can include girth measurements, skin fold measurements, waist-to-hip ratio
• Cardiorespiratory Fitness  (aerobic fitness, i.e. 3-minute step test)

Other assessments that can also be done:
• Muscular Strength (leg press, bench press)
• Muscular Endurance  (push-up test and abdominal curl-up test)
• Flexibility testing (sit and reach, low back, hip flexor, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves)

Cost of Assessment 

Fitness Assessments are offered FREE for students and Rec Center members. 
There will be a $20.00 no-show fee for missed scheduled appointments.

Location for Assessment 

The 'Wellness Suite', located upstairs in the Student Rec Center, is a comfortable, private location for assessments.

Fitness Assessment Preparation Guidelines: 

To prepare for your assessment, please follow these pre-test instructions: 
-Wear comfortable clothing; perhaps something allowing for skin fold or measurements on bare skin.
-Wear proper footwear – supportive athletic shoes.
-Avoid a heavy meal, alcohol, and caffeine for 2-3 hours before the testing.
-If a smoker, avoid smoking at least 3 hours prior to assessment.
-Avoid strenuous or excitable activity prior to testing (for accurate blood pressure reading).

Please understand that all tests are voluntary and can be stopped at any time.  If you feel any discomfort – physically or psychologically – inform the test administrator immediately. 

What happens after the assessment? 

At the conclusion of your assessment, you'll receive personalized exercise and fitness recommendations to help you achieve your fitness goals.  You can begin working out on your own or attend some of the Group Fitness Classes.  If you are looking for more of a commitment to yourself, you can make an appointment for a Personal Training session.

Your records are kept confidential, but available.  Additional fitness assessments should be done periodically to ensure gains are made and goals are being met.
