CSU-Pueblo hosts MATHCOUNTS for area middle schools


PUEBLO – Thirteen teams from Southern Colorado middle schools will compete in the 2014 MATHCOUNTS – Southern Colorado Chapter competition on Saturday, Feb. 15 in the Occhiato University Center at Colorado State University-Pueblo.
 
The MathCounts event is locally sponsored by the Coalition of Pueblo Engineers (COPE) and is hosted by the College of Education, Engineering and Professional Studies (CEEPS) at CSU-Pueblo. In Colorado, the program is made possible by the National Society of Professional Engineers–Colorado (NSPE-CO). Schools register with MATHCOUNTS and receive coaching and testing materials and begin in September preparing for regional competition.
 
The top teams & individuals advancing to state competition on Saturday, March 15 at Colorado School of Mines. The state and national competitions are organized by the National Society of Professional Engineers. The Mathletes who win the Colorado State Competition go on to Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition, scheduled for May 8-11 in Orlando, Fla.
 
Entering its 31th year of competition, MathCounts strives to increase interest and involvement in mathematics among all middle school students in order to assist in developing a technically literate population essential to U.S. global competitiveness and the quality of life. Topics include algebra, probability, approximation, geometry, and statistics. Problems fit in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade curriculums across the country. Problems are designed to accelerate students’ interest and achievement in mathematics.  The program is one of the country's largest and most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students.
