Colorado State University - Pueblo Healy Center to announce entrepreneurial contests

PUEBLO – The Healy Center for Business and Economic Research and Services at Colorado State University-Pueblo and Junior Achievement Pueblo District announced today (November 1) the start of the Pueblo Future Entrepreneurs Business Plan and Venture Capital Plan Competitions as part of a news conference in front of a vacant storefront at 307  N. Main in downtown Pueblo.

Representatives of the two organizations announced two parallel competitions, student and adult, which will offer prizes, scholarships, and equity capital to the winning entrepreneurs, while encouraging entrepreneurial thinking and action in Pueblo County.  All entries must be new ventures, not businesses currently in operation.

The Student Business Plan Competition is open to any third through 12th grade student enrolled in Pueblo County. The online entry is free, but registration is required. The grand prize for the Student Business Plan Competition Top prize is $1,000 cash and a four-year Hasan School of Business (HSB) scholarship worth up to $4,000. The scholarship may be redeemed only when the winning student enrolls in business courses at CSU-Pueblo.  Runner up cash prizes will be made at the $500, $300, and $200 levels.

The Adult Venture Capital Competition is open to any adult who creates a plan to open a business in Pueblo County and demonstrates a willingness to operate the business.  Entry for the Adult Venture Capital Competition requires a modest online early registration fee of $10, or $20 for late registration.  All participants have a chance to win prize money and prize packages.  Prizes for the Adult Venture Capital Competition include accounts, “in-kind” benefits, and possible venture capital seed money that are redeemable when the entrepreneur officially opens the business, which ultimately stimulates the economy in Pueblo County.

Prizes in the adult division will be awarded by objective category (primary job creation, social entrepreneurship, HUB Zone location), and three to seven venture capitalists stand ready to provide equity capital to get the business started.  Equity capital could range anywhere from

$1,000 - $250,000 per business funded.  Several business proposals, or none, could be funded depending upon the quality of the business plans and presentations (similar to ABC’s Shark Tank).  Workshops will be conducted by Healy Center representatives from Nov. 1 through Feb. 28,

2014. Early registration for the competition will close on Dec. 31. Final registration for both
competitions will close on Feb. 1 with all entry submissions due on Feb. 28. Contestants must present and negotiate live with the venture capitalists at the finale, April 5, 2014, at a location to be determined.

Complete contest information and an application may be found at www.pueblobizplan.org. For more information, contact the Healy Center at (719) 549-2757.
