Colorado State University - Pueblo recital features Chinese soprano faculty member

PUEBLO –Chinese soprano Lily Zhang joined the Colorado State University-Pueblo faculty as visiting guest artist for 2013-2014 and will present her first recital at 7 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 11) in Hoag Recital Hall.

Zhang comes to Pueblo with an extensive international career, including performances at the President of the Czech Republic’s New Year’s Concert in Prague, the Easter Sunrise Service at the Hollywood Bowl, the National Grand Theater and the Great Wall in Beijing, and Lincoln Center in New York.  In 1999, she began studying voice and continues to study with voice master Martile Rowland of Colorado Springs.

Zhang is the first soprano to win the grand title of “Top Ten Singers in China,” an accomplishment she repeated three times.  She has performed numerous operatic roles, most notably, Jiangjie in the Chinese opera ‘Jiangjie’, Violetta in ‘La traviata’, Cio-Cio San in ‘Madame Butterfly’, Zerlina in ‘Don Giovanni’, and Mimi in ‘La bohème.’  Her performances have been broadcast by Chinese television to an audience of more than 1.3 billion.  Prior to coming to CSU-Pueblo, Lily served as the Chair of the Opera and Chorus Department at Sichaun Conservative of Music, China.

During the recital, Zhang will be joined by Zahari Metchkov, piano, and three of her students attending CSU-Pueblo from China, Wenjun Liu, Luole Ziang and Shuo Wang accompanied by Jóel Smith.
