Colorado State University - Pueblo students raise awareness through KONY 2012 march

PUEBLO –Students at Colorado State University-Pueblo hope to encourage student activism and involvement though a variety of KONY 2012 activities this week.

Internationally, the KONY 2012 movement by an organization called Invisible Children raises awareness of Joseph Kony, a man wanted worldwide for turning children into sex slaves and child soldiers with a large Ugandan army. More information is available about Invisible Children at www.invisiblechildren.com

Several events will lead up to the main Cover the Night program and march on Friday, April 20. Videos will be shot of students in front of an “I choose to take a stand” poster. The photographs will be made into a video about how CSU-Pueblo students will take a stand against violence and support the KONY 2012 movement.

On Tuesday, posters stating “I am an ACTIVIST for. . .” were located in the Library and Academic Resources Center and the Occhiato University Center. Students wrote on the posters their intent to be an activist for various causes. The posters will be displayed at the Cover the Night event on Friday by the Fountain Plaza.

Students will gather on Friday at 7 p.m. at Fountain Plaza for a performance sponsored by the Office of Student Activities and the Associated Students’ Government, to include vocal and poetry performances, as well as a motivational speech on activism. Free KONY 2012 shirts will be available to the first 100 attendees. Students then will divide campus into six zones and will chalk sidewalks with phrases like “KONY 2012” and “Stop LRA Violence,” hang up posters, and put up yard signs to raise awareness about Invisible Children.
