Teacher Education Program at CSU - Pueblo earns 10-year accreditation status, award

PUEBLO – The Teacher Education Program at Colorado State University-Pueblo
has been accredited through 2021 by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC), which presented CSU-Pueblo with its top annual award for innovation and excellence in program self-study. A celebratory reception will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23 in the Occhiato University Center Hearthwell Lounge.

According to Associate Dean Dr. Victoria Marquesen, re-accreditation both of the undergraduate and graduate programs came with no weaknesses and no stipulations, which is a credit to the program for successfully chronicling the curriculum and accomplishments of the program. TEAC awarded CSU-Pueblo the Frank B. Murray Award for Innovation and Excellence in Program Self-Study last week at its conference in Chicago.

 The award is presented annually to an educator preparation program selected from among the cases granted accreditation by TEAC during the year. The award recognized excellence in the investigation of (or inquiry into) the performance of the program’s candidates and completers and in the capacity of the program’s quality control system to support programmatic improvement and excellence. TEAC noted CSU-Pueblo’s learning community design supported by a performance–based assessment system that tracks 65 rubric-evaluated program standards at three transition points in the program as well as giving formative feedback throughout the program. The program “not only documents and monitors student progress, but is used to monitor the programs’ strengths and weaknesses.”

Among the evidence used in the assessment plan are:
1.    Course grades and grade point averages
2.    Faculty and cooperating teacher ratings of field experiences, student portfolios and each program standard
3.    Three standardized test scores
4.    Job placement rates
5.    Career retention rates, and
6.    Evaluations of the students by employers, alumni, and the students’ self-assessments
“Program assessment and evaluation, while critical to the future success of an academic program, is a time consuming and rigorous process that often goes unnoticed,” said CSU-Pueblo President Dr. Lesley DiMare. “Kudos to the teacher education faculty for approaching this recent re-accredication in a manner that not only brought benefits to the program but national attention to the University.”                                                      --more—
The TEAC is dedicated to helping educator preparation programs improve and be accountable for their quality. TEAC membership represents a broad range of higher education institutions, from small liberal arts colleges to large research universities. To date, TEAC has accredited 134 programs in 104 institutions of higher education in 25 states.

The common purpose of teacher education programs and other programs for professionals who work in schools is to prepare competent, caring, and qualified educators. The TEAC quality principles are the means by which the faculty makes the case that its professional education program has succeeded in preparing competent, caring, and qualified professional educators. CSU-Pueblo’s evidence included results of national exams, evaluation of teaching plans, direct observation of teaching, and surveys of graduates and their supervisors after one year of teaching.
