Colorado State University - Pueblo to gain $2.1 million for EOC program renewal

PUEBLO – Colorado State University-Pueblo’s TRIO Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) has been awarded a five-year grant of $2,115,000 to encourage and assist low-income and first-generation students in southeastern Colorado who are considering postsecondary education.
This pre-collegiate program helps disadvantaged adults gain access to higher education. The grant award is expected to provide services to 1,550 residents in 12 Southeastern Colorado counties and one Northern New Mexico county each year.

The new grant will allow for increased use of computer technology for serving remote locations, additional services related to increasing the financial literacy of students as well as outreach to military service members and their families.

The central office will continue to be located on the CSU-Pueblo Campus (Library and Academic Resources Center 365) with satellite offices at the Pueblo Community College, Pikes Peak Community College, Trinidad State Junior College, Otero State Junior College and Lamar Community College.
Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Zav Dadabhoy said the renewal was made possible in large measure due to the program staff’s ability to obtain all of the grant objectives for the last grant.

“The program will help to strengthen CSU-Pueblo’s ties to the communities in the region and further demonstrate CSU-Pueblo’s leadership and commitment to providing equal access to higher education,” he said.

The grant aims to help students attain a GED or other alternative high school diploma programs, complete college admissions and financial aid applications, and, ultimately, enroll at a postsecondary education institution. SCEOC program services will include providing information about college, scholarship, and career opportunities, making referrals to GED and college preparation programs, and engaging in a variety of literacy training.
