Colorado State University – Pueblo earns four awards from CASE District VI
PUEBLO – Colorado State University – Pueblo’s Admissions and External Affairs offices earned four awards – one gold, two silver, and a bronze -- from District VI of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) this week as part of its 2011 annual conference in Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 9-11 at the Westin Crown Center.
The University earned four of 199 awards that were selected from 610 entries submitted by schools in the organization’s eight-state region. CASE District VI includes advancement professionals (fundraising, alumni, communications) from public and private K-12 and post-secondary schools in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The University competed with schools with enrollment of less than 1,000 to those with more than 25,000 students. Individuals from higher education institutions outside District VI served as judges for the competition.
CSU-Pueblo received a Gold Award in the Excellence in Advertising/Billboard Environmental category for the Transfer Student Campaign created along with Denver’s Amelie Company to attract community college transfer students. CSU-Pueblo hoped to increase the transfer of students from the Denver Metro community colleges by announcing ourselves as a viable and easy transfer option through advertising at light-rail stations and bus stops near Red Rocks Community College, Arapahoe Community College, and the Community College of Denver. CSU-Pueblo is the only University in the state to have articulation agreements for everyone of our majors with all 15 of the state’s community colleges. While attempting to attract transfer students, the advertising also brought increase awareness of CSU-Pueblo to the Denver area. The University has experienced significant application, admits, and enrollment increases in freshmen from the Denver metro area, with applications and admits increasing by about 45 percent from that geographic area.
The University earned a Silver Award in the Excellence in Advertising category for its Single Ad – Think About it. The ad features students who have had success on a national scale in order to highlight their accomplishments and to help prospective students realize the quality of our student population. CSU-pueblo has significantly lower admissions standards than the larger flagship schools in the state, but we thought it was important that they understand they can “find themselves” and be successful on a national stage as easily here as at one of the schools with a greater academic reputation.
CSU-Pueblo also earned a Silver Award in the Excellence in Multimedia – Web Sub-site or Special Section for its I-Phone application. Creating a mobile version of the university’s website through the use of a smart phone was the main objective. While a completely separate mobile website was out of the University’s budget and time frame, the smart phone application provides users with quick access to the most popular portions of the website. CSU-Pueblo was the first university in the state of Colorado to offer a unique free iPhone application that wasn’t the creation of a template from an outside vendor. It has strengthened the University’s reputation as being on the leading edge of current technologies. Application development was funded through Student technology fees.
Finally, the University earned a Bronze Award in the Excellence in Communications/Internal Audience Tabloid/Newsletter category for its ThunderWolves Howl. Because of the transformation of the campus from a commuter to a more residential campus, the University has dramatically increased the amount of Student Life activities in order to keep those students on campus entertained. By placing this weekly sheet in the bathroom stalls all over campus, the University has been able to capture a huge segment of the student market, which has been known not to open e-mails or read the campus publications. The newssheet, produced and edited by the offices of Student Life and External Affairs, reaches students, employees, and visitors with announcements, events, and deadlines.
