Colorado State University - Pueblo hosts Be Your Own Man conference for grades 5-9
PUEBLO – Colorado State University-Pueblo, in conjunction with numerous community agencies and businesses, will host the 2010 Be Your Own Man Youth Conference from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 in the CSU-Psychology Building.
Boys in grades 5-9 will learn how to become strong, successful, and respected young men through education about the dangers and consequences of making poor choices and through tools to help individuals dream and plan for the future.
A $5 registration fee covers all conference sessions and activities, a breakfast, snack, full lunch, and conference t-shirt. Collaborating sponsors include: CSU-Pueblo, Pueblo Community College, Pueblo African American Concern Organization, Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation, Pueblo City Schools, Pueblo School District 70, Boys & Girls Clubs of Pueblo Country, La Gente Youth Sports, Inc. Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado, City of Pueblo, My Friend the Printer, Inc., and the Spirit Store.
Participants will explore career options in industries ranging from machining and the sciences to automotive, media, health, engineering, and computer information systems. They also will meet men who have overcome barriers such as poverty, violence, addictions, family problems, and identity issues to obtain successful personal and professional lives. Youth will learn how education empowered the men to create better lives for themselves and their families.
Among the session topics will be verbal judo, gangs, drugs/alcohol, internet safety, and leadership.
